Fish - Virus Y

Virus Y is a new virus found in rainbow trout.

The programme starts in 2015 and aims to clarify the occurrence of virus Y in rainbow trout in Norwegian fish farming.

The Norwegian Veterinary Institute found a new desease in rainbow trout in fresh water in 2013. Typical findings were sirculation failure, anemia, infection of heart and skeletal muscle, and liver necrosis. A new virus, called virus Y was found. The virus is not fully characterized yet, and it is still not clear if virus Y is the cause of this new disease.

The strategy for the surveillance programme is risk-based, i.e. targeting fish with disease signs. The programme include active seawater sites with rainbow trout.
